In front of and '!!Many Bothans died.! Well, they fly/hunt in packs (if I'm right, in ep IV, when they arrive in Aldeeran's location they are astonished by the lonely Tie they found, because they usually fly in groups).

So I suppose that implies some kind of formation, some must go in front to actively hunt and shoot, and some must stay a step back and provide Intel for the front guys. And, from the high 'managers' (can't find the exact word as English isn't my native language) of the Empire, they must consider the pilots as disposable. They may be the elite force of the Empire space force, but they are still thousand of them ready to take off and take the place of the one getting blown up because of that lack of visibility. First of all, any aircraft you get in will only provide so much window.

You're sitting inside a ship, after all, not a glass bubble. So the body has to be somewhere. In an X-Wing it's underneath and behind you, leaving the top, a little of the sides, and the top half of your forward facing view.In a TIE Fighter, to contrast, you have the bulk of the ship behind you and to the sides, top and obviously bottom, but in front of you in a gigantic circle is the view. A TIE has a better view of the bottom half of its forward facing vision compared to that of the X-Wing.Plus, in the TIE Fighter (PC) game, admittedly which is now Legends, they were equipped with two scanners showing your front and rear position in relation to all the other ships in the area emitting a frequency, essentially RADAR. So knowing your surroundings wasn't that big of an issue for a fighter with only a circular front facing viewport. And as a side note, the pilot inside the cockpit of the TIE sits at a perfect angle where the front-most tips of the side solar panels are at the edge of his vision. If he got up from the seat and smashed his face to the glass, he could see them on either side, but back where he sits they don't obstruct anything.
